I've read a lot about runflat vs standard tyres for the 5 series. My 535d has a spacesaver and already has non-runflats on the front from the previous owner and rears will need changing in the next 1000 miles or so. There doesn't seem much point in paying the premium for runflats given that I should expect better ride quality with non-runflats, but looking at the options (225/50/17) on the various websites they also come back with result lists that include 'Reinforced' tyres. What is special about a reinforced tyre and do I need them? (Conti Sport Contact 2's from Blackcircles have about a £13 premium for reinforced, as an example.) Thanks.

The re-inforced probably refers to XL (extra load) tyres, these are often used on large heavy cars. My Audi A6 has them. Its important that you get the right load index otherwise the car will overstress the sidewalls and this could compromise handling, and more importantly invalidate your insurance.

Check the required load index. Audi A6 is 96Y. Not sure on 5 series, mine had runflats and I cant remember the load index.

The minimal load index should be on the sticker in the door shut that lists the pressures.
