How much should one expect to be reemed for the priviledge of efficient, dynamic service chimps changing the life blood on one's E46 320 diesel?

They managed to stretch my last Inspection 1 to £281.93 despite not replacing much other than the oil and filter, so I'm debating the merits of letting them loose on it again.

Not sure if this is at all dealers or not but my local sytner garage is offering lower prices at the momment - might be a useful bargaining chip if nothing else.

Cheers, interesting link that, will see what they say.

Looking at this quote:

Looks like even with their discount I saved £115 doing my own last weekend. Could have saved even more, didnt end up needing the brake wear sensor!

Yes they are a little dear for brakes. We had discs and pads all round from an indie for £420 on the 330d, which was cheaper than I could get the parts.

ETA the prices are all "start from as well" so would probably much more on something like brakes.

I don't get it.. If your local dealers employ 'stealers' and 'chimps' which charge more than they quoted, why would you even consider giving them business again? Find a trusted local garage or DIY if it's not under BMW warranty.

It is under BMW warranty. Hence for service indicator reset maintenance it goes to them. Whilst the block exemption ruling means they cannot force you to use them even under warrantied period, I firmly believe a car with a full book of propellor stamps would stand a better chance of goodwill and large claims now its in to yearly extended warranty.

Under the manufacturer's warranty they cannot force you to use BMW dealerships. Under the extended one they can, as this is a voluntary insurance policy! Please check the terms very carefully if you want to keep the BMW warranty!

The other thing to remember is that while the service itself may be done at some indie-matching rate, any subsequent works will be charged at the full-on £150/hour, plus be timed "by the book". Things like pads, discs, belts, fluid changes etc. Your local indie will be a lot more competitive on these!

You can always get the service done at a dealer (to get the dealer stamp), and then get anything they find done at an indy.

Why do they charge £159 to perform exactly the same oil service using exactly the same parts as they charge £129 for on an E46? The engines, all thats touched, are identical and take the same amount of the same oil. They don't even do the microfilters which usually accounts for the difference in price.

As a rough rule of thumb, the engines on E46's use 1 litre of oil per cylinder,my 318ci (older M43 engine) for instance ,takes 4 / 4.5 litres, the 6 cylinder models take, 6 / 6.5 ,hence the price difference. Here is a chart with oil capacities for various engines. http://www.dtbmw.com/tips/Engine_Oil_Chart2.pdf

You missed my point. Sytner want £129 for an oil service on a 330i, which has an M54B30 taking 6.5 litres of oil. But they want £159 for an oil service on a 530i, which has exactly the same M54B30 taking the same 6.5 litres of the same oil.

Probably because the E39 is slightly bigger, so takes a bit longer to walk round as they pretend to check the brakes and fill the fluids etc.

Nearly every BMW dealer in the country should be offering value line servicing since the 1st Sept with inspection 1 services starting from just over £100 for a four pot E46.We have been given a range to fit most E46 and E39 cars (not M3/M5) . There are also kits for pads and sensors, discs and even front wishbone kits all priced well below what it would cost to buy the parts on their own. The jobs are priced as a fully fitted price at a much reduced labour rate.We were one of several inner M25 dealers who piloted the scheme back in July and BMW did a radio and press campaign to launch it. I have a couple of indies interested in the kits as they are such good value it would stop them buying from local motor factor. If you would normally shy away from your local dealer on servicing due to pricing alone it would be worth a re visit. Obviously be prepared for them to up sell items!!!

Service now carried out at main stealer.

£189.59 for oil service comprising oil, oil filter and microfilters (includes £15+VAT charge for courtesy car).

I'm not saying dealers shouldnt make money, but how can I get LL04 compliant oil from a motorfactors or even Costco for £30 less than BMW? Costco and ECP are still making money on the parts at that price too and half the time the stuff out Costco is Castrol as recommended on my oil cap!

Out of interest PartsGuru, thats twice now complaints of hesitation, poor torque and poor fuel economy have been blamed on a sticking actuator and the solution has been to lube it. Is this one you've come across much?

Service department bloke couldnt give a monkeys frankly over my concerns, it was lubed, thats it solved. Well, it needed lubed at ~36,000, still ran crappy and now needed lubed again at ~55,000. But this is apparently nothing to worry about as the actuator is outside the turbo so wouldnt contribute to the turbo failing problems these engines have.

Actuator sticks wastegate shut or only partially open, over speeds the turbo, mullers the bearings/shaft/wheel. Seems a fairly real possibility no?

My local dealer has adopted the same pricing menu now.

They cannot explain to me why a 530i oil service is so much more than a 330i oil service even though the labour time is the same and the parts used are identical.

Heck even an E46 M3 oil service costs less than a 530i oil service.

Why?

Hi Fox, the E39 has two micro filters costing around £28 each and the E46 only has the one

Hi Emicen I would need to know what version you have ie the low power or later high power version, but the basic checks would be air mass meter readings and things like EGR valve and gas recirc system. does the lubing solve the problem short term as another common reason on these is just a dirty air filter causing loss of power etc?
In reply to your oil price question sometimes the dealer network have group deals to buy oil and the prices are set at head office level. Even the dealers buying their oil direct don't have a huge markup on it. I'm sure like with most things you get what you pay for with oil and there is nothing stopping you suppling the oil when it is in for a service. These new prices we are all working with include the oil as well and should mean we can price our service work at a closer price when compared to the Indies.

But the low priced servicing menu specifically states Microfilters are NOT INCLUDED and are chargeable at extra cost eek
