INDUCTION KIT FOR 1996 523i WHATS THE BEST???
Discussion
any induction kit will be useless without swaping the inlet manifold for an m50 one, your 523 is a restricted 2.5 engine, the m50 manifold has much larger intakes so you can get more air into the engine and make approx 190hp.
however if you want the noise more than the power gains fit a cone filter from k&n, you will get no more power just noise.....

Contact alpina527 on the E36coupe forum. He supplies big-bore throttle bodies to fit your car (he's based in Chelmsford, Essex though will deal via post if req'd).
In Germany car insurance is grouped according to BHP. The 323/523 is restricted to about 172bhp for this reason.
If you then have the car mapped it should make 190bhp-ish.
If you're going to fit an induction kit, go for Cold Air Induction (CAI). These ensure only cold air reaches the filter thus preventing feeding hot (=less dense/lower oxygen) into the engine. I don't know if they're available for the E39, I doubt there's much demand this side of 540's tbh. Try DaveF, again on E36coupe forum.
With a decat, decent exhaust and appropriate mapping you might squeeze just over 200bhp from it. Usual rule applies though; swap it for a 528 or 540 if you really want more power, and it'll probably be cheaper in the long run too.
ETA sorry as per steve_bmw's original reply, you'll also need to fit the M50 intake manifold
