I have got a manual 318is 1993, the speedo needed replacing so Quarry motors dispatched me one in quick style, the problem is at 66mph my car used to show 3000rpm now it's only showing 2000rpm at 66mph everything else is fine.
My old (and new) speedo both show 160mph max but all the other e36's I've got and have show 140mph.
My question is what model e36 have you got and what's the top speed showing?
Does anyone know which other models would have a 160mph speedo.
For what it's worth my wifes 323 auto touring(1999) shows 2000rpm at about 70mph but her speedo only goes to 140mph.

My car is definitely doing more than 2000rpm at 66mph, It's showing 1000rpm at 40mph and is ticking over at 400rpm.

If you look at these 3 photos of 3 different pods you will notice the black plugs along the bottom, there are 18 holes and each pod has a different number of black plugs in and they seem to be in a different sequence in each one.
Does this mean that each model of car requires a different set-up If so how can I find out which is which?

This next photo is the original one that came out of my car yesterday.

The black plugs across the bottom are the bulb holders, and by the looks of if, you are missing a lot of bulbs.

In order they have 8.10.10 and 7 bulbs, mine being last. If you look closely at the back of the cluster each hole has a symbol to show what it is for.
Engraved on the back is the VDO number, the BMW part number is written on a piece of paper stuck to the back, I think I might have been sold a wrong un. It would be dead easy to stick a BMW part number on after Joe Muggins (me) has told them what number I am looking for.
I think sandwiched between the front and back of the cluster is a circuit board that was installed for my car (318is)and so each one is only relevant to an identicle model car, If the engraved VDO number is different than mine I'll be a little annoyed to say the least.
I'm too trusting, I didn't check the VDO on the replacement one before I had it fitted.

Sounds like a dash from a 6 cylinder - hence the revs being 2/3 out. On e30's theres a coding plug on the back to switch between 4/6 cyls, not sure if it's the same on e36's?

Quarry motors have sent me a second dash pod. Two manufacturers made instrument clusters for the 3 series they were VDO and Motormeter. There are 3 types, white backed, blue backed, and black backed. Then is would seem that they are either 4 cylinder or 6 cylinder.
Simple really.
