Okay so most of the BMWs now have run flats and no provision for a spare wheel. Are winter tyres also available as run flats? If not do I assume you would have to rely on gunk and a compressor in the boot?
I have an X5 on order and was just wondering what the alternatives are in that I am keen to get a spare set of rims with winter tyres on (trips to Austria) but would prefer having a space saver or similar rather than have to try and make that daft gunk work in sub zero tempreatures.

Yes. Winter tyres are available in Run Flat spec.

Your nice dealer should be able to offer an approved winter tyre/wheel as a set.

Bloody hell that seems expensive. A colleague of mine in Germany bought a complete set of alloys (not steels) including winter tyres (for a new mini Cooper, I understand diffent car) for €300 all inclusive!

I agreeits expensive, but these are the OEM wheels and brand tyres. I paid 1600€ for mine, and part from looking at nonRFT nonOEM wheels/Tyres, cheaper is not possible for the X5.

I suspect the 300€ is per wheel. The BMW price list for the Mini is about 1200€ for 4 so this fits.

no, it was for a set of 4 butthey were non-BMW wheels but who cares for a set to be used during winter. I also think that there are many deals to be had in Germany since using winter tyres is the norm over there, so sales volumes for these products are huge compared to the UK.

I live in Switzerland, and yes its the norm. 300€ for wheels and tyres is v cheap. Second hand steel wheels and tyres are more than that normaly, so your friend did well. I sold my 4 year old VW alloys and 4 season old w tyres for 450EURO last month!
