E36 coupe 318i or 318is?
Discussion
Hi all.
I have just aquired a 94 3series coupe with a knackered engine. I havent picked up the car yet so im unsure of what engine it has. The owner thinks its a 318i, but i thought there was only a 318is made in 1994? Am i wrong?
Not sure what my plans are for it yet, either strip it and make a starter track toy for myself, or put an engine in and sell it on.
Will a 318is engine fit straight in if its a 318i?
What is the power output of the "is" engine compared to the "i"? I know the "is" engine is a twin cam 16v compared to a single cam 8v but thats where my knowledge ends!
Thanks in advance!

318i is 110hp, 318iS is 138hp. From experience the 318i is dead, wouldn't pull you out of bed. It's not even a good engine in the lighter E30.
If you're putting in an engine, it'd be rude not to use the 16v lump.

Its a 318is. I bought an 'R' plate E36 in February with a genuine 90k miles on it.Its a bloody good car, quick, handles well & gives a good mpg although to be honest thats not something i care too much about (even though i know that i should).
I have owned a couple of E30 models in the past, the E36 is a great improvement over the E30 & i doubt that i will sell it.
In fact i'm now looking for an E36 M3 to use as a track day car. Havent found one i like yet & also havent mentioned this to the other half......
Not sure that she will be very happy when i mention it to her.

bmw made a 316i coupe so it is possible they made a 318i coupe
if the car is a 318i coupe and you want to fit the 318is engine you will need to get all of the wiring ecu and the ews
if you are going to the hassle of fitting another engine have you thought about fitting a 2.5 or 2.8 litre engine because after a wee while you will be looking for more power and you dont get much out of the 318is engines
on the 328 if you fit the 325 inlet manifold, remap the ecu and fit a filter+exhaust you are looking at about 220-230 bhp (up from 190 bhp)
if it is a 318is and you are going to change the engine for a larger one then you will have to change the diff and either modify or change the rear subframe as well because the 318is uses a small diff casing which is only fitted to the 318is everything else gets a large diff casing
seeing as your possible 318is is a 94 it will have the m42 engine which suffers from profile gasket issues and is a head off job to fix

I used to have an e36 318is, was a lovely car but it had to go when I couldn't keep up with a friend in a 1.4 fiesta. Relatively good acceleration but no torque for motorway driving and quick overtaking without dropping down a gear or two.
Better than a 318 but really show and no go as they are heavy cars. Get a 328i, I used to have a sports touring and the power that car had was fantastic.

If its a 318iS, ill probably leave it at that rather than going to much hassle.
Ive had a 318i saloon before though and wasnt too impressed with the power dispite my previous car being a Cinquecento! So id be tempted to fit a bigger lump if its one of them.

You may be able to use an early E36 92-94 325i single Vanos engine, 192hp in stock form! This was available as coupe or saloon and theres usually a few snotty ones on Autotrader you could buy complete, and cannibalise for everything you need. BMW also did a 318iS saloon in 1998 as a run out model for the E36. Fritz's Bits in Somerset do a conversion for this engine into an E30.
Just recently I had a 98 316i Coupe (a whole 103hp..) and actually found it a nice car to drive, albeit you had to work it through the gearbox on the open road.. I was very pleasantly surprised considering I have previously owned a few older BMW's, all 6 pots.

The 318iS is a seriously underrated car. The handling is arguably the best of any E36 model and they're quicker than the 320i. Definitely a big step up from the 318.
Yup, I have one as my track car. With most of the interior stripped, it has been superb on the track and takes a lot of abuse. I recently fitted Spax coilovers, so hoping it will be impressive on my next track outing.Edited by Gad-Westy on Monday 28th September 20:18
