E46 318 idle problem

Hi guys/gals

Owned my 2001 (Y reg) e46 318 for bout 3-4 months now. in last month or so and gettin increasing frequent when i first start the car it is dropping below idle (750rpm i think) and stalling the engine. I am getting no warning lights on the dash and was wondering what the likely fault could be?

Are the revs jumping for a short time before it stalls? I've had a similar problem with my E46 325 and occasionally when I start it, the revs jump up and down between 500-1000rpm and touching the throttle will inevitably stall the engine.

I had mine put on the diagnostics which came back with a Throttle Valve error. There are some more posts that include this as myself and a few others have had similar problems. I would suggest taking it to a good indy, or to a dealer and having it diagnosed to find the specific fault. Mine is happening less and less now, but I get full range of warning lights when it does happen, so the engine management is aware that its happening.

Cheers pal, its going in for service n M.O.T. next month so ill get them to look at it then, its strange coz it doesnt do it everytime, but it is becoming more n more frequent as time goes by.

when i strat engine it revs at 1000rpm then over about 5-10 seconds it drops until eventually stalls but with a gentle rev back to 1000rpm its seems to b ok, when idling at traf lights etc it doesnt do it either just when u start the car, quite annoying haha
