130i vs 120d real world fuel economy?
Discussion
Can anyone with a 130i give me an honest view on the consumption? With the non-facelift there are claims of 35mpg on the motorway. Are they true? How about around town?
And how about the 120d? If you drive it normally what do you get in return?
I ask because there are some quite frankly fictional claims made about my current car! People claiming it gets over 30mpg on the run etc. Does it b

That's about what I thought it would be - not much more economical on the motorway than my 5er it would seem! Better around town though, 23 is my average so far - I get about 17-19 around london.
So that means if I want an eco-downgrade it's got to be the 120d

I get an average of about 42mpg from my 120d, its driven reasnobly hard but I don't thrash it. I get 45 when using the Mrs's 330d on my comute, which is rather annoying as I expected better from the 120d...
I know a 130i owner who does a similar route to me and says he gets around 30mpg.

Yeah but is he lying? I know a 130i owner who does a similar route to me and says he gets around 30mpg.

I've had a facelifted 130 for about 18 months now.
Best I've managed was a true 34mpg (brim to brim) on a relaxed 70 mph cruise up the A1, with little traffic. It drops to 27 mpg around town, and if you were really give it some stick then low twenties I would think (I'm that not that heavy footed)
For what the car is I think the fuel economy is incredible. It's 30% better than my old scooby as well as being faster and far more refined.
Diesels will be better no doubt, but as I don't do many miles and have an irrational hatred of diesels it wasn't a consideration for me.

So 45 from a 330d? Maybe I'll look at those - might be slightly out of budget though...
It genuinely averages 42mpg over a year the Mrs's comute is a mixture of town and m'way driving. Im looking into 330i's at the momment they about 2/3rds of the price of a 330d - thats a lot of fuel at only 10mpg difference

I've had my 130i for about 3000 miles now and it has averaged 28mpg.
I have done very little 6th gear cruising (maybe about 400 of those miles) as we don't really have motorways or even decent dual carriageways round here so most of my rural driving is in 4th and 5th because I still love using the gears on this car - for the acceleration and the noise. I have come from a 330ci auto that averaged about 27mpg over the 6 years and 50k that I owned it.
Blindingly obvious but if you don't need to change the car anyway don't forget to factor in the changeover costs which will negate an awful lot of fuel savings.

Yeah it's sounding like I'll get about a 4mpg saving... Not enough to make the switch. So question is can I bear a 4 pot diesel? I have driven one, and it wasn't awful. But a 545i it ain't!I have done very little 6th gear cruising (maybe about 400 of those miles) as we don't really have motorways or even decent dual carriageways round here so most of my rural driving is in 4th and 5th because I still love using the gears on this car - for the acceleration and the noise. Kinda curious but what engine is in the 130i? I assumed it was the same as you get in a 330i e46 but I might be wrong. And how about the 120d? If you drive it normally what do you get in return?

In many a what car thread you get people claiming these do an easy 34mpg average. I've always been a little unsure on the claims and if true wouldn't a 1 series be more economical?

Edit: Yup it's the N52, also found in the e90.

Ive had my 130i (2005 so pre ED model) for only a week and so far so good in the economy stakes. Coming from a cooper s works which was suprisingly frugal on my usual journeys (all motorway during the week) the 130i seems to be only a couple of mpg worse than the mini - staggering for an engine which is almost twice the size.
rather than straight figues, it might help you to know that it cost me about £50 to fill the tank in the 130i the other day where the mini would have swallowed £45 from the same point of "emptiness". I would be able to get upto about 300miles on that tank in the mini; the 130i is currently telling me I will be getting in the region of 320-340 miles
as for the car itself. its bloody awesome!

Over 12 months and 20000 miles I averaged just over 33mpg on my ED 130i but I do have a VERY economical A-road drive to work with no stop-starting. Best I managed on a brim-brim trip from Manchester to Swindon and back was 38.5 average, although the journey down was 42mpg with cruise on at 70mph
Nearly fell asleep though!
In comparison my E46 330i (not a patch on the engine in the 1er as mentioned above) gets around 3-4mpg less on the same routes.
I must stress I do very little sitting in traffic so the above figures are easily achievable, but once you get into town it drops a lot, as you'd expect.
