Whats engine is best for high motorway mileage
Discussion
Thanks to my son wanting to have a motor of his own, I need to reduce my 2 cars down to 1.
The RS6 Plus has now sold and the 08 Prius I currently use for my 30k work miles per annum is now looking a tad unappealing...
I have narrowed my choices down to
123d MSport
130i Msport
330i ED coupe or saloon
335d coupe or saloon
The first question is - what would you say is the best engine to do 100k+ miles in - N/A ie petrol of a diesel.
I'm thinking of longevity of the turbo's etc.
Oh, if you can think of any other Mmotors that can do 35+MPG on runs (lots of motorway) then please chip in.

Whilst it's an older generation I do 30k/yr in my 528iA, averaging low thirties, high was 34 over summer which has recently been dropping. It actually does high 30s, low 40s when on the m/way cruising along just traffic jams and town driving that bugger it up. I imagine the newer, smaller and lighter 130/330 should be able to easily match that. However I'm sorting costs out by LPG'ing it, going in this Monday for the operation, at which point I will start to care slightly less about the painful petrol station visits - every 3 days!
Cheers,
Rob

It's going to sound like a well-worn PH cliche but 335d is your motor; 35mpg minimum in mixed driving, better still on long motorway journeys. Effortless torque and the only one that won't feel that slow after the RS6.
+1330i is still a good engine and will give you high 30's mpg, however whats the point if all you're doing is sitting on the Mway...
Ref the 335D - I know that this will be the best car. However, would I expect to see problems with the twin turbos over 100k miles?
MPG aside, I was thinking that a N/A petrol should last longer than a more complex oil burner with one or two blowers.
Oh, and the six cyinder is going to sound better than a 4 or 6 pot diesel.
Although non will sound as good as a V8!
Are there any high mileage, e90 diesels out there?

I am not sure how much turbos cost to replace, but lets assume its £1200. Would you save that in 100k miles over a petrol? MPG aside, I was thinking that a N/A petrol should last longer than a more complex oil burner with one or two blowers.

Assuming the petrol is 100% reliable though...
No, just assuming that the petrol doesn't have any turbos and that all other maintenance costs are similar - unless you mean that the diesel is guranteed to be 100% reliable so the only difference is the turbo? Total speculation in any case of course
My 530D has just shot its turbo at 214K miles, if i had it serviced before it blew it would only have cost me £200 rather than £500.
I get 40+mpg on runs and 37 around town.
The torque is awesome for towing and even after 215K miles it still runs sweet and uses very little oil.
my parents run a 330i and their average is around 28mpg, both cars are manual.

That's good news Julian... does it use much oil?
Assuming an auto box, have you had the transmission fluid changed?
No, doesn't use oil.Assuming an auto box, have you had the transmission fluid changed?
The auto box is now in need of a £1k refresh by a ZF specialist, but that's more to do with towing the M5 in a less than sympathetic manner rather than anything else.
335d no questions asked, as stated before its the only car that will still feel quick after the RS6 and will handle miles no problem at all
Curious as to why you are stuck on saloon/coupe though, tourings are a far prettier and more practical option IMO
Petrol cars for doing miles like you are make absolutely no sense at all IMO

I'm planning on doing a bit of towing next year, it'll be a 500kg trailer rather than a car but with 120k on the clock I'm a bit concerned about keeping the car for it. Any more info on the refresh and what the symptoms are?john_p said:
