The cars are mechanically pretty robust, but as ever buy the best you can afford and look closely at the history. Bodywork is not bad, however the electronics can play up. What do you want, a cruiser that looks good or a sports car. 840's are pretty heavy trucks, great for lazy drivers but wide and not great for town driving.
No problems to run this as an everyday car. I run an 850Ci and apart from being slightly thirsty it's reliable enough. For more information have a look at www.8er.org

Seems very quiet there...Back on topic, I'm looking into these as a daily drive, floating to the office in style. I'm guessing economy would be similar to my E46 330Ci auto c. 20-25 MPG. Sound reasonable?

I've had my 840 for 6 months now and use it every day.
Across a mix of driving the OBD reckons I've managed 19.2mpg since owning it.
It is big and heavy, but fabulously smooth on motorways, it just gobbles up miles.
As suggested, buy the best with FSH. Mine's the 4.4 litre V8, it cost £7500 @ 62k miles for a 10 year old car. Its not going to depreciate much more so £1200 a year on servicing and tyres isn't going to blow the bank.
Mechanically, it is uncannily similar to the E32 735 I also have...

Personally I wouldn't want to run it as an every day car.
Just my opinion.
Expect no more than 15mpg around town I'd say.
Go for the best you can and again, IMO, the best is a late 4.4 840Ci Sport. The sport bits transform it, none Sport trim looks a little dated, whereas sport trim keeps it looking a bit smarter.
The last ones were made on V plate, but not so many of them, look for a '99T.
Not biased, obviously.

Just go for it! Had a new one on a T plate and after 80000 miles in 18 months, sold it for a pittance. So bought another R reg about 4 years ago and have enjoyed every minute since. Only expense besides changing the oil every 3000 miles, and minor servicing, has been a new a/c compressor and small problem with ABS light.
Average since I have had the car has been 19mpg but mostly use it locally with only the odd run.
Pixels on OBC are a bit hit and miss, front spoiler can be a bit precarious due to long nose overhang but otherwise worth every penny and would never part with it.
