hi
i own a bmw e36 318is 1998
since ive had the car there has been a clicking noise. im sure the noise is coming back the back right tyre but i aint 100% sure. ive got the car checked out by a mechanic and he said the car is fine. if i drive over a ditch or drive over a hump it makes the noise. Ive had the exchaust changed 5 months ago but i have been having this problem before having the exchaust fitted. i have heard its a common fault in bmw e36
cheers

Ive had the heat shield checked out.. no noises coming from there.. some people have told me it could be the heat sheild
i know it cant be a cv joint. when i turn the car its got no problems at all
only when i go over a ditch or a hump
the car has got 150k on it, i will get the rear shock mount checked out but im sure the mechanic would have noticed if the shock amounts are the culprit
This is strange. If it's when you go over a bump (I'm presuming "going over a ditch" is a typo
), then one would have thought it's suspension. However, most suspension problems produce a knocking noise, not a clicking. Clicking makes me think you've got something stuck in the brakes, but then it wouldn't be when going over a bump.
My first port of call would be the damper top mounts, as mentioned above. If you can reach, try wiggling the dampers at the rear and see if they're loose at the top. You may need to jack the car up to do it. If they need replacing then they're a few pounds each and just bolt on inside the boot. The hardest part is getting the carpet out!

If it does turn out to be those, fit the Z3 reinforcement plates at the same time as they don't cost much Shropshiremike said:

Oh, I should add, the hardest part is actually getting the damm carpet back in properly
