525i automatic making a strange clinking sound.

Hello all,
Just been out for a drive in my dads 525i (automatic, year 2000) unsure of the shape E number wise.
When you change from Park to either Reverse or Drive it makes a noise when it engages that I can only describe as two bottles clinking together. Its only started recently but it definatly does not sound right or good.
Hopefully someone has maybe seen this problem before or could point me in the right direction as to what it would be?
