2004 BMW 525 diesel oil leak
Discussion
Posting this for a colleague so only know the below. He's looking for some assistance and hope you can help. Especially as the stealer is quoting £3k to fix...
"I have a 2004 BMW 525 diesel tourer. I have been told my my local dealer, following a scheduled service that it has an oil leak caused by a failure of the cylinder head gasket. The car has been regularly serviced and has done 48,000 miles. I have been very surprised by this and would like to know if this it is reasonable to expect the cylinder head gasket to last well beyond this sort of mileage?"
What I said was I'm surprised too and if he's not loosing oil, evidence of leak or pressure drops I'd ignore it or get a second opinion. Seems Bonkers are trying it on again!
Any collective wisdom or experience on this from the PH boffins? Go on impress him and save him a fortune!

Hi,
I've never heard of a head gasket on that engine leaking anything. It could well be the camcover gasket leaking a little engine oil and that is running down the engine and along the head/block joint. If it is that, it's still quite an involved repair as the fuel injectors and fuel rail will have to be removed to access the camcover.
You really need to have a good look at it, clean all the oil off and keep an eye on the leak to see exactly where it's coming from.
Another possibility is engine oil seperator blocked/leaking.
