As the title suggests, a bit of buying advice needed if anybody has experience of both cars as a comparison. Looking for around a 04 plate E class saloon 270/320 Cdi W211 or a BMW 530d E60, A bit of un-biased advice would be appreciated. This is posted in both Merc and Bmw forums as i realise that each forum will be biased towards its own brand, Thanks in advance.

So the Merc is the 2 generations old W210 (rust nightmare) or the "just" one generation old W211? And the 530d is an E39 or E60?

Assuming W211 v E60, you need first of all to compare the E320 CDI with the 530d, to have a comparable engine in terms of refinement and power. I would say that the 530d is the more enjoyable, powerful and better looking car, and reliability wise it would probably also be a better proposition. The W211 5 speed gearbox is known to have problems with leaking, needing an expensive gasket repair + electronics are quite fragile + IIRC the brakes are fly by wire that were dropped in the facelift, while the 530D have some problems with swirl flaps + of course the love or hate I-drive.

PLEASE DONT GO FOR THE E-CLASS!!!!!!!!!

I have an 03 plate. Its the W211 model. The tiptronic gearbox/Torque converter went twice. I'm constantly replacing control arms and shock absorbers. Also now the bootlid and right front wing are rusting.

I will never ever buy a Mercedes again. Also their customer service leaves a lot to be desired. I was sold a clocked E-class prior to the one i have in Bolton by a dealer. Cue trying to be fobbed off and me getting trading standards in.

Merc = Pile of st..

I have realised that i would rather have a reliable car that can actually get me to work. Whenever i get into the E320 CDi i am scared it will break again as it seems so fuking fragile for a big car!
