I have just purchased a 2002 E39 530i sport model, and now having had it a couple of weeks I can occassionally smell burning coming from the dash. I never noticed it on test drive. The dashboard pixials are all fine and all electrics work.

Has anyone ever come across a similar thing?

I had very similar to what your describing when the BMW business stereo in my e39 started to die, it was shortly followed by poping and white noise from one of the speakers. In my case it was one of the sound outputs feeding the drivers door speaker burning out (very common apparently and not fixable).

After a short while the smell went away and the stereo continues to soldier on but just doesn't play much sound through the affected speaker. Every month or so it has a funny five minutes making the popping and white noise but it soon sorts its self out.

Be fitting a decent aftermarked stereo when I have the time - tho will miss the oem appearance.

had a diagnostic check done on the car and the auto-electrician reckons it's the steering angle sensor thats burning. Anyone heard of that happening before?

Also, the check threw up codes showing a misfire on two cylinders. He reckons the coils will just need replacing (each cylinder has it's own coil) and said this is a common fault. Just concerned I have huge bills coming my way. Anyone aware of this fault at all?
