Z4M mileage discrepancy problem
Discussion
I've just put a deposit down on a Z4M that I seen and test drove at a local BMW dealer.
I checked all over the car and could only find fault in a panel which has had a respray at some time. The rest of the car - interior, wheels and engine are unmarked as new.
I thought however when I got home that I would just run a RAC HPI check against it. To my horror it came up with a mileage discrepancy on this vehicle:-
11/3/09 NMR 9000 miles
11/3/09 NMR 48000 miles
26/7/09 NMR 11000 miles
27/8/09 DVLA 12000 miles
28/8/09 NMR 23000 miles
28/8/09 NMR 23977 miles
03/9/09 NMR 24000 miles
This is the data currently held on the National Mileage Database
I immedeately phoned the dealer who reassured me that it was a BMW AUC vehicle which has had its history verified and will come with a HPI clear certificate and a mileage verified certificate.
The car is a 07 plate with just over 11000 miles on it so where are they getting the mileages from ?
Please tell me that I'm reading to far into this.... and the data that they have is often completely wrong.
What comeback do I have with BMW ?
I also assume that it would be very difficult to mess with the mileages on these cars ??
They are prepping it ready for collection tomorrow at 3pm

Has it had a personal reg no?
This can sometimes cause confusion.
Didn't seem to have Vroomer. I have just read this on another site though -This can sometimes cause confusion.
"Basically what can happen is, when a dealer HPI checks it and does an NMRCheck (National Mileage Register Check), they input the current mileage on the HPI website. If this is wrong or higher than the actual mileage, the next time someone does the NMR check with the correct mileage, it will show up as a discrepancy,
I've seen this happen alot. You will probably find the 83,000 should have been 8,300"
seems like it can happen if people have run a few HPI checks on it

If You've typed this exactly as the HPI check shows then the highlighted information instantly tells Me that the mileages have been entered incorrectly and this report cannot be trusted ( 9K and 48K miles both entered for 11/3/09 I checked all over the car and could only find fault in a panel which has had a respray at some time. The rest of the car - interior, wheels and engine are unmarked as new.

).As for 11K miles on the 26/7/09 up to 23K miles on the 28/8/09, perhaps someone went off round europe for a month and just couldn't stop driving the car! (500 miles a day for 24 days= 12K miles, unlikely but you never know).Perhaps they went to the 'Ring and got carried away! (
).If it's a BMW AUC car just check the records carefully with them as their records will be more accurate than the HPI and if you still have doubts get them to check all the mileage storage points to see if they tally up with each other.
If you still have doubts then walk away.
checked with the BMW dealer and he is 100% adamant that the mileage is ok and the NMR is wrong..
He explained to me that it is very difficult to alter the mileage on these cars as it is held in various different places. The keys also apparantly hold the data as well
They are also supplying me a history and mileage verification certificate and as a AUC car wouldn't be allowed on their system if at all suspicious.
I wonder how many sales are lost each year because of HPI checks....

Hope they put your mind at rest and it all works out ok for you.He explained to me that it is very difficult to alter the mileage on these cars as it is held in various different places. The keys also apparantly hold the data as well

By the way, that is a damned fine car the Z4M, fair play to you!

It seems that the NMR etc must be wrong...all the same, it's very worrying that this sort of data is kept, not verified and just given out without any explanation of how it is collated. Typical govt shoddy process. I mean if you were selling a car in good faith, but lots of buyers were turned away because someone who looked at it previously had entered the mileage in wrongly...how is that helping solve the problem of clocking??He explained to me that it is very difficult to alter the mileage on these cars as it is held in various different places. The keys also apparantly hold the data as well

I had the same problem on my Z4, BMW wrote a letter to the NMR people and got the history corrected. In my case they suggested a technician had most likely mis-entered the data whilst the car was in for work/mot.
No, It would have been a lazy, bone idle, sausage fingered, doughnut eating salesman!paoloh said:

Suffice to say the matter was rectified within a few days and HPI showed no issues after that.
Has the same issue with a Z4MR i had, trouble is anyone and i mean anyone doing a mileage check AND inputting a mileage will then make the mileage they have input appear on the list....i could do it tomorrow to the car and put 99000 in. After speaking to the NMR and providing the service book with the stamps and mileage via a fax they deleted the erronous entries. They wouldnt confirm 100% where they had come from but said it was from a dealer in the Midlands, car i was buying was from Edinburgh. Also the entries were the same mileage (10k more than on the car at the time and about 4 weeks prior to the date i was trying to get them removed!) and one day apart.
Stupid system IMO.
