How come the Alpina B10 is so much more expensive to insure than an E39 M5? An insurance quote on an M5 comes back at £530 whereas the B10 is close to £770. Is it purely because it's a rarer beast?

I imagine to do with rarity, cost of replacement parts from Alpina?

I haven't found that, personally: who have you tried?

Only direct line. My M3 was £520 last year. A B3 comes out at £590.

Huge difference between the M5 and the B10 for some reason.

With Admiral I found the B10 nestled between the 540 and M5, probably where it should be.

Direct Line has always been extortionate for me regardless of chariot..

Direct Line are usually the opposite for me. I usually get a good deal so use them as a yard stick. I might have to look around if they are going to be silly.

It is worth shopping around when trying to insure an Alpina, most major companies have no idea what you are talking about.

Try Sky Insurance, they saved me ~£200 at last renewal.

£830 with Elephant eek 7 years no claims. No convictions, no claims. Must be living in Manchester that's doing it!

Problem seems to be that the Alpina B10's get classed as an "import" so they have higher costs associated with them..

Can depend on which drop down menu they use; some list Alpina separately, some not at all, & some as part of the BMW list. If you're on the 'phone, you need a clued up operator to spot the difference.

I found the same with the Z4 Alpina Roadster vs M Roadster.

The Alpina was about £1400 cheapest quote (all the comparison sites), the M was about £750 iirc.

Really odd, and the £500 difference easily covered extra tax costs and service costs per year, so made it pointless to buy the Alpina as a 'cheaper' alternative.

I would love to understand insurers weightings sometimes, but I think in this case as others have said it is that Alpina bits are harder/more expensive to source/replace!

The insurance prices have really put me off. It's almost worth getting an M5 for the amount I'd save. I think my mind is set now though - on a C32 AMG.

I thought as a member of PH you could haggle a discount from Adrian Flux? Even if you can't the're pretty switched on when it comes to the exotic stuff and fairly reasonable price wise.

It's probably worth a try. Cheapest so far is £710 so anything close to £500 I'd be happy with.
