electrical problems 540 e39

I've been having electrical problems in my 540 for years now but it seems to be doing it more often, it's intermittent but it does seem to do it much more when the car is hot. it seems like a bad earth or feed and i was hoping for pointers on where to start looking.
the obvious symptoms are as follows i may have forgotten some of them.
dot matrix display in the dash vets VERY bright.
outside air temp starts to read very cold usually down to -40C which seems to make the heating compensate and turns up the heat really high.
lastly, when its doing this the indicators work but don’t display internally.
any ideas?
