Was in the Preston Hall, Stockton Dealership on Saturday on my second hand E60 diesel buying odyssey. Incidently apparently, the 3 series selling more than Mondeo (i.e. just too many of them about) was a myth, as is fleets/company cars not replacing their fleets, they are, but is isn't myth that 530d & 730d are incredibly hard to find with good spec, and that they do hold value better than any other brand, hmmm, according to the salesman.

Anyway, they had 5 series GT on the lot. Have to say nose on, looks fine, evolution rather evolution, side on and rear, not so sure, looks odd if not a bit fugly I'm afraid, almost squashed mpv/soft roader/van, like it was coming down the line and halfway along as an X6, and someone said stop, changed my mind finish as a 5 series, if it didn't have propellor and a different grill I'd dismiss as the sort of weirdness/fail crossover you'd get from a Korean or Jap manufacturer. Still it is supposed to stand a bit higher to attract old folk, so there's hope for the proper normal 5 when it arrives. The C pillars around the fancy (imported from Skoda) twindoor boot, looked fairly substantial, suggesting the fancy rear door is a tad heavy to me, like that area had to be beefed up.

Anyone else seen it in the flash? Dons flame pants.

I had a good play with the 5-series GT which was at Goodwood Festival of Speed in the summer (hidden in a not-very-exclusive tent on its own). I thought the interior was very nicely finished, but the movable rear seats underwhelmed me and the complication involved with the folding bulkhead in the boot was just ridiculous.

External looks didn't do it for me either.

Oh, the Goodwood car was RHD and there was a tax disk in the glovebox: it was already registered. Wonder why it's taken so long for BMW to send it out to the press?

Got an invite to the "event launch" this weekend, I'm surprised they have it on public display, I remember when the 3-series coupe was launched the car was hidden away until launch day.

Did they have the X1 there as well, and if so, any thoughts?

Saw one on the A4 at the weekend, on the opposite carriageway. I couldnt see the front end, and thought it was an X6. I only realised when I saw the rear lights. Have to say it looked huge, and not very elegant at all.

I spotted one a couple of weeks ago in Wilmslow. Looked really high at the back, like the suspension was jacked up. Just looked wrong somehow...

I went to see the X1 last night at the local dealer launch, I have to say I was underwhelmed by both really. I'll wait to see one on the road.
