I've been looking at getting an X5 diesel (old shape) but I spoke to someone at a dealers yesterday (wasn't trying to dell me one) who ran one and reckoned he never got good mpg from his - 22/23mpg he reckoned.
So, is this true, and if so, how bad are the bigger-engines petrol X5's in comparison?
Diesels are supposed to do 30-32, while the petrols (4.4, 4.6, 4.8) do 19-21. I drove a 4.8 recently and didn't even realise we were towing a trailer and race car on the back! Rapid tank!

a mate had a X5 3D and drove it quite hard , he was averaging 28 -30 ish I have one - 56 plate bought at 6.5k miles now at 37k.
Trip computer has two consumption calculators - one I re set leaving the dealership on the day I collected the car.
This currently reads 30.1 mpg. My 30K miles have been a real mix of motorway and urban driving although I am not particularly heavy with the right foot.
On a motorway cruise it will do an indicated 35-36mpg
