E39 Battery / Alternator failure?
Discussion
Had the car breakdown yesterday in the pouring rain.
Charge light came on, the the dash lit up like a christmas tree, the display said something about a transmission safe mode (auto) then nothing, dead as. Luckily i wised to its early demise and pulled off before I made the traffic worse.
Does anyone happen to have any ideas as to whats likely to be the problem? or has seen this before?
Cheers!!

Could well be alternator, the "all dash lights" thing seems to happen when the battery voltage gets low. I assume the transmission error will have been related to a sensor getting confused with lower voltage and that will all clear up next time you start.
Have you charged the battery and tested the voltage on it with the engine running and without?
