Hi,

I am currently looking to change my car (Mondeo ST220). I was originally looking for a C55 but have decided I hate automatics and want something for less than £20k from a main dealer for peace of mind.

After testing driving a few cars this weekend I have narrowed it down to either Gold GTI/R32 or a BMW 330 M-Sport (saloon or coupe if possible).

What are people experiences of the E90 330 in either saloon or coupe form?

Cost of ownership? (i.e. servicing/trees etc)

Problems?

Satisfaction?

Anybody gone from a Golf to a 330 or vice versa?

I went from a V5 Golf to an '06 E90 330i M sport - admittedly an auto touring, but running costs will be similar for all variants. I've had it for 3 years / 24000 miles. Servicing has been good, probably less than £1000 over 3 years, tyres are expensive especially if you stay with the standard fit run-flats. The M sport package includes different size wheels front and back, think its 225/40x18 and 255/35x18, no spare, rears are around £250 each (£330 from a BMW dealer!). It's not particulary economical - my daily commute is around 10 miles each way, the OBC shows an average of about 22mpg, but can get up to 30 on a run. Great car to drive, fantatstic engine, ride not brilliant though improved by not using run-flats. The Golf I had was a mark 4 2.3 V5, no comparison to the BMW.

large runflat tyres ,horrendous cost.

My little 16 inchers are £93 why the massive difference I wonder.Commute of 22 isnt that bad considering my 120d auto ED can show 26 mpg on a 10 mile outer london commute.People do say that the 3 ltr is economical.

I've a manual 08 330 saloon with the newer engine - wee bit more oomph and better economy (worst tank = 25mpg, best = 40, average around 30). You will get the newer one for your £20k I would think - the emmissions are 173 and it has 272ps.

Agree with most of the above - lovely engine and trasmission, great to drive. Only real downside for me is the ride which is firm at best, crashy at times on a rough road. RFTs are to blame of course (and they cost a packet as noted above !)

Had it a nearly a year now and it's still not needing a service. Overall it's a lovely bit of kit and I've no idea what I could replace it with ...

Thanks for all your replies...

I am now the proud owner of a Le Mans blue 330 M-Sport manual with black leather.

It's pretty much the exact spec I wanted (heated seats would be nice but I can live without) and I'm really happy with it. The engine, chassis and the feeling of quality has exceeded what I expected.

Couple of questions though:

- It has the professional nav and when the (strict!) lady talks it doesnt mute the radio. Is this right?
- What is the rest button on the climate supposed to do? (I have read manual but still don't understand!)

Cheers

Well done Austin - nice choice thumbup

May I ask what year ? Manual or Auto ? And more importantly - PICS ?!

Dunno about the nav sorry, don't have it.

Re the 'rest' button on the climate - is that a typo, I can't see one on mine ? What symbol does it have on it ?

Cheers, DD.

Pretty much identical car to mine. V Nice.

The "REST" button is used after the car has been turned off, and uses the heat from the engine to keep the inside of the car warm when the engine is off. I think it can also cool the car... not sure - I rarely use it. Can be handy if you need to wait in the car for a bit, though,

Satnav voice... again, hardly use it but AFAIK it does temporarily reduce the volume while she speaks.

Its on a 55 plate was bought from BMW so is a AUC. It only has just over 20k miles and is in fantastic condition. The age doesn't bother me as I bought on condition and spec.

It's a manual, I tried an auto but hated it.

No pics at moment but if weather is nice this weekend I shall clean her and put some pics in the readers cars section.

Someone else with great taste then smile

The rest button sort of makes sense now. I can't really see much point in it though. It's quite prominent so I thought it must do something exciting...obviously not...

Will try sat nav again and have a little play around. I have only tried it once and the volume stayed the same so I couldn't hear the sat nav voice. Just upgraded to 2009-2 disc so maybe that will sort it.

Found my REST button on the way home tonight ! Fecking obvious really - I must be blind not to have seen it before. I does indeed work as you say - kept Mrs DD toasty while I nipped into Tesco for booze thumbup

The residual heating button is useful as you've found out and it works well! smile

Sat Nav does mute the music etc when giving directions, if you can't hear it try increasing the volume when an instruction is given. Easier said that done, granted.

Le Mans Blue? Best colour!
