For anyone that might be interested,

I got my Warranty renewal from BMW as my 2 years on the D3 is about to expire. They wanted £835 for their top cover for the year.

Rang around and checked different policies, Warranrty direct came up with a more comprehensive warranty, where I take it directly to BMW, for £420.

Bmw isnt even BMW themselves, they use Modial assistance.

Nice saving me thinks

I think you could have done better mate. I got the top level cover with a franchised DEALER rate and maximum claim being the vehicle value with £25 excess for a 535d M Sport 06 for £340!

Blimey - who is that with?

Your car is probably worth more than mine.

The only thing they were funny about is that it was an Alpina - so it was classed in the 'BMW Performance Category'

Its a blinking 2.0 diesel!

Its with WD - the trick is that you need to get a quote online and then wait for them to call you...more here:

Does the BMW policy give you breakdown cover? I bet the WD one doesnt, and it chips away at the cost difference. My brother had a WD policy on his Alfa (this was a LONG time ago) but he was well out of pocket (£1k+) when he had a claim for a broken cambelt, they wormed their way out of paying for a lot of consequential stuff.

BTW I'm guessing a D3 is an Alpina - wouldn't they class that as modified?

I've also recently gone with WD having also read the link 535dman has just put up - just cancel at the point of paying and they will pretty much match whatever price you have/say you have been quoted elsewhere when they call you which in my case was the next day.

The BMW offering is way too expensive.

I get breakdown with my bank account so that doesn't concern me and the only person I know who made a claim with WD found the whole experience to be top drawer.

I read several posts on here about WD and along with all such offerings there were good and bad comments but overall the good far outweighed the bad.

OP has already declared his D3 to be an Alpina (and therefore a performance BMW for WD's purproses) so it isn't classed as being modified further. It might be BMW based but its official manufacturer is Alpina.

Have made two in as many months.

Second claim: BMW Z4 hydraulic roof motor. £760. Approved.

No problem with a claim for me....instantly approved and cheque received within 5 days worth £890!

Id reccomend WD anyday over BMW warranty. My roadsides with my bank too (part of premier banking).

Do they still have the single claim limit of 1K ?

Just checked my paperwork.

The limit per claim is the value of the vehicle.

I didn't do quite as well as 535dman - I paid £420.00 based on up to 30k miles per annum with franchised dealer repairs.

The BMW alternative was their comprehensive policy which was offered at £713.00, also excluding breakdown cover.

They have a hell of a lot although can still cost as the mileage racks up as they do a % allowance on higher mileage cars depending on the policy.
One example is we did £6500!!!! eek of work on a 51 plate 3.0d x5 over the space of 3 months and they covered around £4000 of the total work. Still worth having the cover for the owner thoughbiggrin

Totally disagree. Have used them on two different cars over the years and never had a problem with claims. You just have to make sure you get the top level cover with no claim limit.

This is an accurate point - labour is 100% covered, the value of parts covered decreases as mileage increases:

up to 60k miles - 100% covered
up to 70k - 90%
up to 80k - 80%
up to 90k - 70%
up to 100k - 60%
100k+ - 50%

Expensive for the X5 owner above but the cover still took care of around £4k.

I've had mixed experience with BMW dealerships so I'm doubtful their own cover would be more willing to pay out than WD anyway.

Was expensive for him the worst part was seeing it turn up so often at my garage just couldnt believe the poor guys luck i think we ended up having it more than he did all started with a popped turbo then went rapidly downhill from therefrown
Not all related to the turbo either
