If buying a used car from an official BMW dealer, is it worth getting the car inspected independently before purchase or not? Is there any kind of return within x days when buying a used car from BMW should one not be happy with the car?

No. As an AUC it will already have had a thorough inspection by a BMW technician.

Still worth a close personal inspection to ensure that the car is accident free, tyres are good, service history is included/complete, no work is imminently required, etc.

Well, that's a good point about being accidentfree. I was going to ask the dealer to state this on the sales invoice since there should be no problem for them to do this if they've inspected the car.

If you read the AUC Ts & Cs accident-free has nothing to do with it. Should a dealer wish to do so he could push a pretty ropey car through the system and there's not much anyone could say about it. The AUC sez "Every Approved Used BMW undergoes an independent check to verify its recorded mileage and vehicle history to ensure that the car has not been stolen or written-off, and is not subject to any outstanding finance agreement. A certificate confirming that these checks have been made is supplied with each vehicle." Nothing to prevent a car with a poor repair or even an unrecorded write-off that's dealt with outside of the BMW network from being sold. Not saying it's common but just be aware of what AUC actually means.
