Came across a weird problem today. Just started regulary using super unleaded and in Tesco I tried 3 pumps and none of them would fit in my car yet unleaded fits no problem. I have no idea why, the attendant says she has heard of it before. Never have a problem with Shell Texaco etc. Its hardly difficult putting fuel in a car but this has me stumped. The nozzle did not appear to be damaged Anyone else had this? Its a 99 E39 528.

What ever you do DONT put Tesco petrol in your car, it is the cheapest of the cheap and not worth the saving if you care about your car, they can sell it cheap because it is topped up with the maximum allowed ethonol.nono

Is this true? Would have thought it risky for Tesco to sell fuel which is not of good quality...

It is true and is completely legal to top up fuel with ethonol its just tesco push the it to the limit, others like shell stay well below, thats why its more expensive and also higher octane.

As i said in my first post tesco only acheive the 99oct by adding cheap ethanol to the maximum if this is what you want its cheaper to just by your own and its got a 129oct, other fuels have a cocktail of adds .

I've used Tesco 99 for about 8 years now as its my local station. No problems whatsoever in various 'performance' cars.

Surely if Shell and others were using less ethanol than they could and it was making their fuel better, they would advertise the fact. Sorry, this Tesco fuel being crap because it has extra ethanol in it sounds like bks.

Also, cars are built to run on fuel from all over Europe (the World?). I'm sure UK supermarket fuel is better than many that would be found in other countries.

I thought Shell recently started adding ethanol to their fuel?

No, it's not true. It's total bks. All fuel comes from the same bulk storage tanks, it's only the additive package that changes.

Personally i have followed many threads on fuel and seen all manner of info on the net/tv/car mags. I'm not at all worried about the qualitity of the fuel at Tescos. In fact i think there 99ron stuff is the best value performance petrol going, i would only ever "upgrade" to Shell/VMax if i had had a win on the dogs.

Tesco is not exactly a micky-mouse company selling dodgy fuel..... its a multi billion pound industry but even it could'nt afford to fix 100k cars all day long....

Regardless of the station, I often have problems filling up my E39 530i

Seems to be the only car I have ever owned where the pump often cuts out every quid or so. Bloody annoying.

Try to angle the nozzle 45 or 90 degrees clockwise, and see if this helps.
