Hi all,

ive found an interesting car in the classifieds, and wondered if anyone could answer a few questions.

firstly, the boring bit, i'll fill you in on my current car situation:

I came very close to buying an e35 M5 a month ago, to be scuppered by the fact my insurance company wont swap my insurance to an M5- esure will only insure you on an M5 if your over 30, and im only a few years shy. Im not interested in cancelling my insurance, as i need to complete this year to bring my ncd up to 5 years.

So I thought, i'll keep my current little shed car until insurance runs out, then find myself a perfect M5 next year, and a different insurance company.

Then my current little current shed car starts showing early signs of HGF. Dang.

I have my heart set on getting an e39 M5 sometime next year- the few i test drove just felt perfect for me. Never felt that in a car before. I liked the driving position, the engine, the toys, it just fitted like a glove.

So, i've been looking for something to drive until next year, and not too expensive. Dont want to buy a really modern car, loose a lot of money in depreciation, then find myself unable to buy the m5 im after next year. I also cant bring myself to buy a complete shed either. Im fed up of tooling around in horrid little underpowered old cars.

So whilst browsing the PH classifieds, i spied this:

http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/414115.htm

it really tickles my fancy. A little old perhaps, but must be quite rare? Mileage isnt intergalactic, and surely wont loose much value over a year? Something about it really interests me.

Would anyone be able to fill me in on the whole Hartge thing? My bmw knowledge is sadly lacking.

Would it make a good purchase? Or would i spend all my money on maintenance?

any help would much appreciated

B Oeuf

i emailed them about this very car in May (its been on here for ever!!!)

this is their reply...

"We don't recognise the car, so I don't think it's been here recently. There is no such thing as an H35 based on a 5 series. This will eaither be a H5s with 245hp Hartge engine, or a H5sp with 254hp. If you can get either the VIN number of the registration number, I'll have a look on our database to see if we have any info. Regards, Kevin Bird"

Read into that what you will whistle

still, might be a real bargain but otherwise I would wonder why it never sold in the time its been for sale...

Yeah and those are either poor photos or the car doesn't have the best paintwork...

The H35 was the e30 m3 based car. This one does have a hartge rocker cover which is pretty rare, but nothing else of note.

A lot of the fancy e30's are fakes, as there wasn't much record keeping, so people just put the stickers on the back and claim it is a rare special edition.

In short, it's definitely not a "h35", and at the very best, may have had an engine from one of the larger Hartges fitted, but highly unlikely.

The advert says it's got E36 'M'alloys. E36 wheels won't fit on the front of a E34, they will bolt on but they won't turn as the off set is wrong.

If you fit spacers on the front they will but then your looking at £100+ hubcentric spacers so that the wheel has a lip to sit on.

I've been in a similar situation, i had 2 x E34 525i Sport and a 535i Sport so the M5 was the next step up. Unfortunately i couldn't find a good rust free M5LE in my budget so i went Jap instead.

I'd say try an E34 525i sport instead. For the money the one in the add is on sale for you could pick up a late E34 sport that has been cared for and well maintained.

Best of luck with whatever you decide....

And oh, a pic of mine old sports.

Why bother?(with spacers) There are enough 5 series wheels to fit.

Ah that. As stated above, it's been for sale for at least 18 months, if not longer (memory fading with age). Even the photos are the same.

The only thing is that I don't recaall is it being so close to Windsor - otherwise I'd have gone and checked it out, from an idle curiousity point of view.
