I was reading EVOs top 100 drivers cars feature again this evening and was reading the praise they had for the E30 M3.

It got me thinking, is the E30 M3 regarded as the best ever car built by BMW? What other models would you regard as their best? What would be the top three?

depends really on what you are looking for doesn't it. if you mean drivers car then probably E30 M3 or the E46 M3csl. looks aside as an all rounder the current M3 and M5 aren't bad are they, clarkson himself said the current M5 is the best M5 ever, and as such the best big sports saloon ever made. if you recall to the top gear with the spain trip and where they put the M3 against the lexus IS-F he again had massive praise for the current M3. still gotta love one of these though biggrin

or for overall style probably one of these

my personal favourite though.... E30 M3 sport evo biggrin

All good contenders, also the 328, 1800 (started the new ball rolling) & the 2002 + the M3 CS(L) as a great all round proposition of a practical and close to ultimate driving machine.

As an all rounder, surely the 5 Series (more particularly the E39 and E60) is in with a shout?

The question is flawed.

The E30 M3 was an amazing car for its day but modern M cars would beat it in all departments.

The question needs to be:

What is the best car BMW built for its day?

IMO of course.

Absolutely.

In which case surely the e39 has it with regards to an all rounder, especially when compared with the competition of the time.

1) 328 (original) - they're worth £400K for a reason
2) E30 M3 - genuinely iconic
3) M635CSI - definition of the brand (well, of what it used to be!)

E34 M5 is the best BMW car ever built due to its hand built nature, its amazing handling, performance and size.

The E39 is a great car too but bland styling lets the side down.

M635 CSi is a wonderful drive but NOT a good car to own.

E30 M3 is a top steer but in today's world is lacking power and safety features.

Some of the seven series cars of the late 90's are beautifully constructed.

The 507 is a wonderful car but in its day was underpowered, way too expensive and nearly broke BMW.

2002 models are fun to drive, simple to repair and look great, but rust and again not so quick nor so safe in an accident.
