Hi, this is the first time I've written in one of these forums so please excuse me if I'm going over old ground. I've just bought a 2006 325D M Sport Touring and taken it for its first longish drive from Cornwall to the Cotswolds and back. I only seem to be averaging just under 40mpg which seems to be much lower than the published figures for this type of driving. Is this normal or could there be something slightly wrong? I bought the car from a BMW dealership so wouldn't expect any mods have been made. I was driving most of the way with the cruise control in at around 80-85 mph.

If you have the same car and get much better or similar fuel consumption then please let me know before I try and speak to the dealership.

Cheers

Hi Coffers wavey welcome to the madhouse !

That doesn't sound too bad to me to be honest - a couple of observations: it will be pre-efficient dynamics on an '06 plate I think ? and 80-85 is well above optimum mpg speeds.

Try it at 70mph on the cruise for a while on a flat bit of road - you would see nearer 50mpg I would think.

You could try the dealer but I doubt you would get very far - good luck !

Thanks for the reply. Yeah, it is a pre efficient dynamics one but I'm just surprised how low the mpg was. The book lists the extra urban as 55mpg so even though I'm above the normal cruising speed and not always on flat roads i'm surprised it makes that much difference. It even gives the combined figure as about 43 mpg.

Thanks for your help though.

extra urban will be achieved at 56 mph roughly for all cars. 80-85mph cruise your not going to get extra urban figure and if you were sold the car on that from a sales rep then it is your fault for not investigating further. The manual will state what extra urban means. I would personally call 80-85 fast or pushing on so look between combined or urban. Diesels above xmph don't do so well on mpg that said nor do petrols but people seem to make more noise about diesles not doing so well maybe die to higher expectations.

The other thing the new 325d only achieves 49 mpg combined and yes it does make quite a difference search on here for other responses on it. X35ds seems to make a good 5-8mpg increase so as yours is more economical to begin with the physical mpg difference will be more.

The test you need to do is get your car up to temp then on the mway reset the mpg trip and run it on cruise or without up to you for 5-10 miles you will probably see 60 mpg if so it's your driving style if not issues with the car and BMW need a call

For what its worth when I got my 120d auto ED 174 bhp one night coming home on the M4 I did a little test.
Constant 80 mph for 10 miles =47mpg

70 10 =56

55-60 15 =72!!!!!!
