BMW X5 FAULT CODE?
Discussion
Not sure specifically, but from the sounds of it I'd avoid leaving it in Park on a hill without the handbrake on
ETA - Thinking about it more, it sounds more like the shift blocker that only lets you move it out of park if you have your foot on the brake. Could be a valve outside the box, in which case might not require a new box

Sounds like something to do with the auto box.
Got the code number and I'll have a noise on the scanner later on...
I've just called the garage to get the code and they said they will try and find it for me - however the technician said they are all different.. Oh good!Got the code number and I'll have a noise on the scanner later on...
Is there a possibility the gearbox is on the way out? The vehicle has only done 50k miles and drives perfectly?
Sounds like the gearbox needs a strip!
There are normally two shift locks in an auto transmission and they are related to changing gears not moving the selector from park. As the X5 is 4WD I'm not surprised that there are four, they probably relate to a 4WD mode as it probably has never been off roaded in anger! You may find that the centre diff lock or low ratio 4WD will be inoperable, not a huge problem in itself but will need sorting to become perfect!

Oh my - how much does a gearbox strip cost - sounds expensive! There are normally two shift locks in an auto transmission and they are related to changing gears not moving the selector from park. Hi sorry to just jump in here but I’m looking to see if anyone here has had a problem with the gear selector on X5? I have an X5 2008 Msport and it has developed a problem mainly going up slight hills as it will reach over 3000 revs before it changes from 2nd to 3rd and when it does eventually change gear it snatches the gear and the car jumps, I’m not sure wether to change the gear selector And or service the transmission with kit & fluid 🤷🏼♀️ Any ideas very welcome thank you lesley
