E36 door won't lock - actuator ?

Hi, I'm having problems with one of my rear doors. It started playing up last week, not locking on the remote so I was pushing the button down by hand. Today it's given up.
Door opens and shuts using the inner and outer handles now but won't lock. Sitting on the back seat with the door shut, I'm pushing the door lock button down but it just springs back up. The door won't lock on the remote or the key either.
I've tried the 3 fuses and they are all OK. Would a dodgy actuator stop the door from locking by hand ?
