Hi all,

We have recently purchased an 03 plate 330d auto touring. The misses uses it most of the time for shortish trips round town and 7-10 mile trips. We are only getting around 25mpg on the obc at the moment. I drove it the other day and reset the obc on a 10 mile run on b roads got it up to around 35-36 av. Is this about right for the car. It's just had a new low pressure fuel pump, fuel and air filter fitted and now seem to run and pull well. I think we get around 300-350 miles out of a tank.
Any comments on other peoples experience of this car would be appreciated.

Try it on a motorway, and check if there is any tuning box tomfoolery going on, and if not, i'd guess that would point to a dodgy Maf as long as new car fun can be ruled out.

I had a 2004 330d manual and used to get around 40mpg on a short commute where the engine only got warm after about 2/3rds of the journey. I could get low to mid 40s on a motorway run.

I do seem to recall that the automatic gearbox is said to knock a good 7 or 8 MPG off those figures so your mid thirties sounds about right (not that I have any experience of the autobox in that car personally).

ETA: take it out again, give it 7 or 8 miles to warm up fully, then reset the OBD.

Yep, used to average 40 mpg over 30k in my 330d by this was a manual. You won't regularly see more than 35 mpg from an auto, especially if most of the journeys are short and round town.

My old E46 330d Auto used to average high 30's based on mixed driving - 40+ on a motorway. Don't recall it ever getting as low as mid 20's.

Is there any common faults that can cause poor mpg? Car has 140k on the clack.

Having driven to Scandinavia recently (I am still here) I reset the trip computer on leaving central London (well Canary Wharf)and have done 1250 miles since. On the way over thorugh Germany I far exceeded the speed above for long periods of time but due to weather I had to take it a bit easy in places. The trip computer is showing 26.7mpg so far, against an actual of just over 26mpg by my own calculations. At 80mph I can indeed average just under 31mpg. Thats not such a cool story though I guess. Sis.

I'd replace the MAF with a genuine Bosch part and have it coded by your local dealer. Doing that took my 525D from 28 mpg to about 38
