I have a 1 series M-sport coupe and need to replace the tyres on it. I have the 18 inch low profile run flats that came with it at the moment and was wondering whether others just used the same ones or moved away to other brands and if so which ones.

On a side note the current ones are useless in the snow at the moment with still an alright amount of tread left.

Sticks.

I had 17" Euforias on my 120d M Sport and I thought them useless to the point of dangerous. I changed them Cont SC2s and with an extra 0.1bar found them v good. I've replaced the 18" rfts with Goodyear F1 Asymmetrics on my Z4 and am v happy with them. Falken 452s are a popular cheaper option.

I found the Bridgestone Potenza runflats to be slightly more comfortable and harder wearing than the standard Pirelli Euforias.

If you want a more compliant ride and are sticking with runflats, go for the Dunlop Sport SP01 RFT.

I posted up my thoughts on the differences between the Dunlops and the Bridgestone Potenza RE050A 2G on BabyBMW:

Hope it helps.

Michelin Premacy ZP's are about the nearest I've tried to conventional tyres in terms of performance.

I've tried a few RF combinations having owned 3 MINI's and a 120d

As the OP is on the 18" rims, there will be a very limited range of choice available in RFT. Presently I've only found Dunlop and Bridgestone that do the sizes required - 215/40/18 on the front, and 245/35/18 on the back.

In all fairness, mine's been terrible in the snow but that's because the tyres are summer tyres, very wide and have only 50% of the weight over the rear axle. It'd be unfair to level accusations of rubbishness at the tyre when it's clearly not being used for the purposes with which it was designed. Over in Europe, people have 'winter tyres' and swap. We don't have enough bad snow and ice here to warrant making that worth doing in the UK.

I now have these on the back .The really bad jarring from my bridgestones continentals has eased a bit (bearing in mind I still have them on the front.)

Suggest you keep well away from bridgestones. However they have the new 3rd gen coming out in the summer .These have had great write ups, opinion being just 5% off being like normal.

Thanks ladies and gents, just gave the tyre guy a call and he can only get bridgestones to replace my current tyres which are also bridgestones. Looking through Black Circles et al. the options were very limited.

Something he told me while on the phone is that you have to be very careful with the pressures you keep the tyres at, with only a small change they can get serious uneven wearing.

For reference how long do people find the tyres last?

Many thanks again

Presumably you're running the same sizes as I am. My RE050As have been on for about 6,000 miles and are down from the original 8mm to between 5-6mm. Assuming I change them when they get to 2mm, I have around another 10,000+ miles in the rears, and probably 15,000+ on the fronts.

If you find the Bridgestones too firm, try sourcing some Dunlop Sport SP01s - they're much more compliant and ride better than the Bridgestones do. Alternatively, if you don't need to change immediately (which your original post suggests you don't need to) then hold fire for the new 3rd generation Bridgestones which are due to be released in the summer.

Someone about to sell a full set of Bridgestones, presume I was correct about the sizes you're running?

The ones he is selling are non run-flat, and as far as I am aware you have to use run flat tyres to maintain your warranty. Please correct me if I am wrong on this.

The tyres really need be be changed, the rears are virtually on the limit and the fronts have got some worrying wearing on the sides so I'm swapping those as well. Its not the end of the world though as they have done almost 20,000 miles as well as a trip to the 'ring.

No, the ones he's selling are the runflats. The reference to non-RFT at the end was asking for which non-RFT people would recommend he replaces the Bridgestones with. He appears to be selling because he dislikes them. Personally I'm very pleased with them but then everyone's different. Did people not test-drive a RFT-equipped car before purchasing one..? The mind boggles.

I don't think changing to non-RFT will affect your warranty. If it does, there will be a lot of BMW drivers out there who've voided their warranties..!

I'm running the bridgestone RFT on a 118d 215 front and 245 rear, so far the I'm up to about 32k miles and need to change the rear soon, front is still good across 75% of the tyre, out side edge is looking pretty poor.

will be replacing with RFT's again and probably brdgestone based on the longivity of them but at nearly £800 for a set!!!!!

AFAIK the tyres have nothing to do with the warranty.

Over the last 80 or so thousand miles, I've averaged 20k miles from a set of rears and 25k out of a set of fronts - Michelin Premacy ZP's in 205/55 16V.

What did you actually get in the end then?

After all the input people have given, it might've been nice to have at least let everyone know.

They are Bridgestone Potenza's I think, but I will check after work. I am very happy with them, the bumps are less harsh and the front is a lot calmer.
