Its time to change my work car and i've narrowed it down to these 2. I know most will say the BMW but wondered if anyone had had both cars and what fuel and day to day running is like? Thanks in advance.

My boss has an A5 3.0 TDI(as a second car..alright for some)...i have driven it and the engine is very smooth and refined and yes its also very quick. However, personally i think they look rubbish and the interior looks a bit cheap to be honest.

Consumption wise, think he gets mid thirty's on average and he doesnt drive like a saint.....if i had a 335d i wouldnt worry about the MPG to be honest, as usual depends how you drive.....but why have a 335d and dawdle?

Its predictable but id have the 335d in a flash smile

Edited 'cos I can't type.

Interesting - we have an E90 (320d), although I have the 35d engine in my E60.

A good friend of mine has an A5 3.0 TDi and I would say the interior is nicer than our 3 series - all down to personal preference and opinion I suppose.

I stand to be corrected but I'm sure my mate told me he couldn't get that 3.0 engine in an A5 with an auto? If I do remember correctly it might be important because the 335d is auto only.

I like the look of the A5 and prefer the interior (just) to an E9x. That said, I've driven both and find the A5 a bit dull - I'd get bored in time I think. The 35d engine is excellent - quite a bit more poke than the Audi lump too.

On balance it would be the 335d for me.

Let us know which way you jump!

Agreed - the only problem with a 335d is that there are some to@@ers who insist a remapped version will outrun anything this side of a Veyron etc etc etc.

"Your 997tt won't keep up etc etc etc"

Top car though.

Been in both and I would probably choose the 335d - Im a BM man - however the A5 is still a good car, I found it to be a lot smoother than the BMW but the 335d has the slight edge when it comes to performance. BTW you can get both with auto

Have you got kids ?

Check out the rear room in an A5 - It's deceptively small compared to a 3 series.

But if you need a boot, the 3 series doesn't have any space worth talking about.

I've just taken delivery of an E91 (Touring) 330D which is only 3 months old. It's a fantastic car, so you might want to consider the touring version of the 335D. Personally I think they look a lot better than the saloons/coupes plus you get the additional versatility smile

I arrived at the same shortlist and agonised over it at length – then bought a Z4 Coupe!

This IMO isn't really a comparison, 335d everytime BUT that's because I'm not an Audi fan and would never have another

I average high 20s low 30s in mine around town and 40ish on a run, and I don't drive it sensibly all of the time

As with the post above ^^^it's only a few that trot out the 'joke' every time a 335d is mentioned

My shortlist was between the A5 and the E92, I couldn't drive the demo because they didn't have an auto and then a BMW came along at a price I couldn't resist and so far I am really happy with the choice.

ETA mine is the M-sport and the ride is fine because I have junked the runflats and I have been using Cont 3 and PS2's proper tyres and the grip & handling is superb and the ride quite comfy even on 19" wheels. Using 18" winter wheels at the moment.

I could have had the A5 as a company car but the driving experience was boring. Numb steering feel and push on understeer all the way..... TT much more alive but back seats aren't... BM more involving to drive, great ride if NOT M-sport

Its down to personal preference. Each has their merits.

If i was spending that sort of dosh on a car (again) and i wasnt sure, i'd be asking for a loan of each for a couple of days.

I really really like the 35d engine - i've had two 535d's, but i do like the idea of the A5.

FWIW i took a look at both the A6 3.0TDI Quattro Le Mans and the 535d and went for the 535d. But it was a very close thing.

Ive got the 335d, its a superb car and a very good "all rounder" ive not junked the run-flats but then my miles are mostly on the motorways so it really doesnt affect the ride. Mine is the E90 (saloon) M sport, had it about 9 months now and havent regretted buying it one bit. I re-newed the warranty in October with BMW at a cost of 480 pounds, all in, so im happy at the moment that any big bills will be paid up front by them. The only thing i feel that lets it down is the sat nav only reads 5 digits of the postcode, but thats down to me being a little tight not wanting to fork out another 200 pounds on a small peice of plastic to upgrade it. Other than that its a great car.
