HI All,

My wife has a 730D on an 06 plate. There is smoke once in a while coming from under the passenger front side carriage. This is only happening when you turn the car off. It has been into BMW changed the diesel burner at cost of over £1k and came back the other day and happened again. Been back to BMW and no luck. Does smell of burnt oil but no sign of leak. The smoke seems to be coming from where the CAT is. No warning indicator etc, absolutely nothing. Anyone else experience this or can help as BMW stuck too ?

Thanks in advance

This could be the Webasto heater (it's actually a diesel run heater and the smoke you see is it's own little exhaust). There's a thread running under E39 530D aux heater that might help.

This heater (assuming yours has one) - when you open the bonnet there's usually a sticker on the passenger wing that tells you about the webasto heater specification.

If it's not that then er, can't help you I'm afraid!

A friend had this on his X5 recently and I would go for this explanation at this stage......hopefulyl it is nothing serious (and in the case of the Webastop, quite normal and more noticable in the recent cold weather).

are you making short trips in the car?

when you turn the car off the heater burns off the excess fuel in it..

if your doing short trips then the heater never does its full startup / shutdown cycle
