Dear All,

At the weekend i noticed a number of what look like pin sized stone chips (approximately 30 or 40 of them) on the pain just below the seal of the rear quarter window on the driver’s side. This was annoying and show up rather too well on my black 3 Series. To my further annoyance the exact same 'stone chips' are in the exact same position on the passenger’s side!

I’m rather baffled to what these marks might be, any ideas??

I’m having the marks repaired in two weeks but I’m rather intrigued to what these marks are and what might have caused them in such a peculiar place.

Hi bud, these stonechips as u put it sound like pin holes in filler underneath the paint caused by bad prep work maybe? or silicones in the paint caused by tiny fragments of greece/dirt under the paint. if the car has been repaired before then i would say thats wat they are. Obviously i cant say for sure as i havent seen them but thats wat they sound like.

If your car is a 2 door E30 with opening rear window this area is a known rust area due to it being a water trap.

I just had a guy out from Smart, who filled the holes but didn’t know what they were either. As they were on the trim round the window he said he couldn’t actually paint them, anyway they look better...not perfect but it’s a 50k miles car.

We discussed they might have been from ice damage, the car was covered in a blanket of ice and snow a few weeks ago for about 4 days, when i went to work in the missus Ford Ka.
