Hello guys.

What do you think of this.

BMW sytner high wycombe took in an Alpina B10 as a part exchange for an Alpina B3 bi turbo.

They gave him £8000 for it in PX.

Have a look at this and see what it's on sale for.

I think the customer should have tried to sell privately. Any main dealer needs to pay VAT, add in a warranty, pay for their chrome and glass showroom (esp. in this case). I guessed £12k for a 'normal' dealer. This price doesn't surprise me.

I bought a loaded Z4 in June for £11.5k privately. I'd test driven one from Sytner, and the sales guy was great but they didn't have quite the right car for me in stock. I couldn't help noticing the test drive car was £15k for less spec than the one I eventually bought...

That does also seem very, very expensive to me. Would be surprised if anyone offered them anywhere near that amount.

What's that got to do with your mate either being daft enough to give away his motor for peanuts; or a new punter being daft enough to pay over the odds for it.

My guess is that the price is top of book; and your mate gave it away for less than bottom book.

Is that wrong? Absolutely not. Unless you think car dealers, and every other profit-making business in the world, are charities. I take it you work for a charity, and not a profit-making business of some description?

Jesus Christ, that is strong money for that car, even taking the warranty and other costs involved

Can't see it selling quickly

Which could be x2 if they find a buyer at that price (where I guess it's top of book price+)

But then it's not as simple as that. What did your mate negotiate on the replacement?

Anyway - bottom line - business is business. Nothing wrong with that. Enough of us around here depend on that to make a living, pay mortgage, etc, etc.

Kinky ,look we all have our views fair enough. Not my words, however.

We have to service it, replace any worn items & MOT it" - OK, but at trade rates, not retail
"We have to warranty it" - fair enough
"We have to valet it" - that's nice
"We have to make something on it" - yep, that's business
"We need some haggling room" - but £6k's worth?! - and I thought Hexagon were ambitious! I wonder how long that'll sit there...note in the diary to check back after the next Olympics...

Good luck fella ,Pete

You also forget to mention that Alpinas aren't mainstream kit.

Low volume specialist cars do have more significant margins
than the high volume mainstream kit.

Something like a BMW 320D is mainstream, Alpina isn't.

Fair enough and I also think everybody finds it very hard to price these older Alpinas, officianados included. Also learnt I need to haggle harder!!!!

What are people's views on here as to how much the markup should have been for it to be reasonable?

My trade-in is on sale at dealers at the moment and is priced £3k over what he gave me...and I feel he shafted me good and proper but I had to offset the trade in price against the replacement price .. which was one of the cheapest in the country.

There's no such thing as reasonable.

Any sales person will purchase a product at the cheapest price they can get it for; and sell it for the most they can; as quickly as they can. If they can afford for it to sit on the forecourt for a few weeks/months, then so be it. That's reasonable.

If it's over-priced, then it won't sell. And anyone worth their salt will have researched and know that it's £x over-priced.
