Hi,

Recently purchased a Z4, having some problems with the Sat Nav, CD (both ingle and cd changer), Sound etc.

Basically, everything works to start off with, then after about 15 minutes, the sound stops, the controls on the computer freeze or I can't move round the options etc. The only thing that works is the sat nav, but with no sound and as the controls are frozen, or limited it's hard to do anything.

The radio doesnt work either at this point, well the stations are there, just no sound.

If I turn the car on and off it's the same.

If i leave it off for abit, everything is ok.

Now I dont know if this means anything, but when I drove last time, the sound went off a little on the bumps on the road, it might be a coincidence. Then again if it's still bumpy, once it's off it wont come back so dont think loose connection.

The sat nav maps have been updated etc.

Any thoughts? Im thinking of taking it in to BMW, but wondered if anyone had a less expensive idea smile

My 6 series is going into BMW on Monday for a complete i-drive re-program as cold weather makes the system slow down, freeze and even shut down. Apparently a known problem but really annoying

Whenever I call Virgin with broadband issues I find the old turn it off and turn it on again works.

You could try disconnecting the battery overnight and connecting again. Gut feel is that's a long shot and you will need BMW or an indy that really know's his stuff.

I guess it begs the question over how in a few years time iDrive etc is going to stand up to the abuse of everyday life. I know this stuff is mean't to be very desireable, but we do forget a simple switch to turn stuff on really does work well and doesn't feature hard drive failures and software patch updates......

If you're talking E85 (old Z4) then it's not iDrive.

Did you get a warranty?

I had a similar thing when I first picked mine up - in the end it seemed to be because the battery was running low, once I'd done a couple of decent journeys in it everything returned to normal. I also found the indicators wouldn't always cancel properly and the airbag light would often come on.

It's not done it since it's been used regularily - I suspect perhaps the battery was run down as it'd been sat in the dealers for a while, probably with people playing with the electronic gadgets, putting the roof up and down etc.

Hi,

Will charge battery, and give that a go, it's been sitting in my garage for a few weeks doing nothing whilst weather bad. Also tend to just drive every other weekend for a few hours as got a limted mileage policy, so lets give it a go and see.

Is the disc the original one? Do you have another to try? Friendly stealer might have, or you could take it back, assuming it was trade.

Or look here http://www.z4-forum.com/forum/index.php

Sorry, I couldn't get the search function to turn anything up.

Just been quoted £130 to diagnose the problem at BMW Peterborough, deep joy, 1 hours work, if they find it in 10 mins, just charged 10 mins worth so not so bad i guess.

Hi,
I have a 99 740 and occasionally the sat nav / radio / phone all freeze.

Only cure is to remove both the radio and sat nav fuses overnight, that fixes it for another 3 months.
Good luck!

If itd the older Z4 (non idrive) then i'd say its the radio tuner for sure. i've seen that a few times.
