I am not really being serious about this but I came across this:

http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/1488193.htm (off-the-road 328i Sport coupe)

and this:

http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/909820.htm (330i engine + ancillaries + Stage 3 supercharger!)

in the Classfieds.

Would an E46 3.0 fit in an E36 engine bay?

The result would be quite something smile

When you think that a variety of other engines, BMW V8/V12 and yank V8 crates can fit under the bonnet, I doubt that'll be impossible.

Would make for a very interesting car!

the engine itself will fit, and i doubt you'd need any special mounting stuff made up, but you'll need to make the ecu happy, as it'll be missing a lot of the other components that would be installed in the car, it will have an electronic throttle too, so you'd need a newer accelerator pedal with potentiometers in it, and the newer BMWs take a speed signal from the ABS sensors for integrated traction control, so it'd want to see a familiar system there too.

Would imagine so. It's the same size block.

The E46 uses can-bus type electronics so it wouldn't be a plug and play like swapping an E36 engine for an M50/M52/S50. The M52B28 engine can take the M54B30 crankshaft and rods to make a "3 litre 328i" that would be my choice.

The M54B30 is quite a bit more than just a stroked M52B28. The breathing is considerably freer, and I also think (not sure) that its VANOS a has bigger range of angles. Valves are probably also bigger.

It'll have twin, fully movable vanos, compared to the 328 with only 1 and that can just flick between 2 settings, but a 3.0 litre stroker isn't too hard to cobble together, and would have far less head scratching than fitting an M54.
If you could find bigger pistons, you could even copy Alpina and make it a 3.2

I know the M54 is very different to the M52, all I was pointing out was that the M52B28 will take the M54B30 crank and rods to stroke it up to 3 litres. However an M52 with this increased capacity, and the obligatory M50 inlet manifold will put out pretty much the same power as the M54B30.

With a bit of remapping I don't doubt youre right. I wonder how the cost compares against what the original poster was considering.
