Hi all,

Had a new tyre fitted to my E91 330D yesterday by a mobile fitted, when I requested the tyre I specifically asked for a 225/40/r18 michelin pilot sport 2 zp 88y.

I was preoccupied by a crisis at work when the fitting was done and I forgot to check afterwards, but I've just noticed it's the same tyre, but the 88w version.

I need to double check my invoice, but I probably don't have a leg to stand on now as I've used it and I signed the invoice when he left.

Is there much difference between a y and w spec tyre, is it safe to use ?

Thanks,
Peter

The difference in speed rating (W: up to 168 mph and Y: up to 186 mph) is most likely not going to have much practical effect for you, but there could be a difference in the compound between the Y and W. However, a bigger problem would probably be mounting a brand new tyre on one side and the remaining worn one on the other. So, how worn is the other tyre, as tyres should ideally be replaced in pairs by axle?

The tyre on the passenger side is about 6 months old and has 5mm tread on it, that was previously replaced because of a puncture by the garage before I bought the car.

Kicking myself for not paying more attention.

if you notice nothing strange when driving I wouldn't worry about it. The speed ratings also contain a contigency factor, so the w rated tyre will be ok for at least 175mph. How often have you exceeded 150mph in your 330D?

Thanks for the feedback guys.

I figure in 18 months time it'll need replacing again anyhow.

Cheers,
Peter
