Hello all,

A black 59 plate was parked by a kerb I walked past today. It looked very impressive people were giving it a second glance.

But am I right that these are getting on for nearly £60000 new eek

Considering you could buy a GTR for that money or XFR what do you think about that price point?

Hi there,

The 6 series has gained more of an acceptance since it first came out, and I guess familiarity now as well as subtle styling revisions have softened it a bit.

For me, I'm still in the same way of thinking as you, that 'overall' it's not special enough to look like a £60K+ GT car. For that kind of money does indeed buy you something much more beautifully styled and more pleasing to the eye for a larger precentage of the non enthusiast buying public. Technically, I know as a BMW it's right up there with the best in it's class, but the sense of occasion that I'd personally want in a car that'd cost me that much, isn't there.

For that £60K 3/4 year old Aston Martin DB9's are around, go a little older and they're cheaper. Brand new, then yes, the new Jaguar does 'look' the part. I do understand however, there is much to it than just the styling, but at this level of money, it's also quite a substantial element in the buying and decision process!

Cheers, Dennis! West London & Slough UK!

£60k is too much for a 6, they are a great car but not £60k great. Mind you I saw a M3 in Beemer the other day that was on it's way to £70k, crazy. eek

B3pete, I take you drive a B3??
Surely that is the same??
It is just a 335i with a remap and a couple of subtle changes and that is £50,000.

You can get a new fully loaded 636d sport for around £54k after haggling, or a 650i for around £56k which is the same price an an XF-R.
Depends what you want really, BMW still have an image that annoys many, and Jaguar still has an image that well....it also needs to shake off.

You can always say you could buy a 3-4 year old something else for the same price, but there is a 3 year old 650i for sale in a decent colour and perfect spec with lowish miles for £25k in the classifieds, so I guess the real problem is how much new cars cost over here really.
Look at used prices to see what the UK really thinks cars are worth.
In the US new cars are up to 30% cheaper even taking tax etc. into account, however by the time they are 4 years old they are about the same as ours, I think that says a lot.

I think right now I would take a nice B3 touring over an M3 myself too.
I love Alpinas, I love the fact they get the suspension set up right, the fact they are exclusive and the way they look too, both inside and outside.

They always look and feel so special.

My point was, aren't all cars too expensive these days unless you go for something mass produced and the same as everyone else, especially in the UK??

However the B3 is basically a 335i with a remap, m-sport shocks, 330xd springs, straight through exhaust, body kit and the usual Alpina touches like wheels and oversized tyres. Compare 335i sport specced up the same, ie nav, leather, bluetooth and 19" wheels vs B3 prices and I think it is worth the extra. Compare the price of a discounted 335i sport and it makes a little less sense.
You are paying for exclusivity and that is something only the person buying it can decide if its worth it or not.

GTR is a different proposition really. Looks great from the back, OK from other angles and is sublime to drive but the interior is dreadful and just typical Japanese. That put me off considering one as even though it would be great for the daily commute, I just felt like I was sitting in a plastic factory for my £60k whereas the 6 might cause discussion about the exterior, but the interior which is the view I get all the time really is beautifully finished

Any of these make for a more sensible buy at around 18 months old IMHO

Given the 6 Series is essentially a 5 Series Coupe I don't really understand why its pricing doesnt reflect the 5 Series range in the same way a 3 Coupe does the 3 Series range.

Perhaps they would sell more if it did.

Because they want to align it with the 7 Series as much as with the 5. It's (rightly or wrongly) seen as a rival to the Jaguar XK and Mercedes SL/CL ranges, though it is cheaper than them because it's based on a cheaper platform.

I suspect the margin (and the saving in development costs of a comparable 8 Series) makes it profitable enough - the plebs can make do with 520ds smile

Cheapest approved used 59 plate 635d is £44k though - which suggests that they are probably "worth" about £52k new.

Hey Gizlaroc ,will this do you ?From the Alpina Forum "Saw a note on a German board about a B3S Bi-Turbo coming from Alpina. Apparently a 6 inline with fuel injection, twin turbo with:

400 PS @ 6000/min and 540 Nm @ 4500/min "

By the way don't forget the Mahle Pistons Alpina put in that 335i engine.(as If you would)laugh
