Just a quick note to ask whether anyone else has suffered a similar fate?

On the weekend I was driving my 2007 335d on the M4 at a sensible speed when the power suddenly dropped. On accelerating the gearbox would kickdown but speed gain was glacial. It felt like I was driving through treacle.

Dropped the car into a main dealer on Monday, today I have been informed that both turbos have suffered a mechanical failure and will need to be replaced. Luckily the original warranty had two more weeks to run so all work will be covered by BMW.

Has anyone had this problem? My car is a high-spec coupe SE but with no mechanical mods, ie ECU tweaks. Mileage is 46k and I have had the car from new. Judging by my trawl thru 335d related posts I am certainly not as an enthusisatic driver as some of my fellow owners.

Apart from this problem its been a very reliable daily smoker for me, fast yet reasonably economical. Sure its not as exciting/visceral as some of my past and present stuff but day-to-day its a good compromise.

I was planning on keeping it for work but now not so sure. I wonder if this is a good high mileage car or if its an over-tuned disaster in the making? I will certainly get the extended warranty if I decide to keep it. BMW quoted £346 for 12 months including road side assistance but with a £250 excess on repairs - which doesnt seem too bad.

I guess this thread might also be useful to owners of 535d and X5 sd. Surely there must be some high milers out there?

Two separate turbos both failing at the same time? scratchchin

Seems a bit odd. Could it be an oil feed problem or similar?

John, I'm not very technical but I agree that both turbos failing at same time is odd. The service manager mentioned some cracked pipe - could this be associated with the oil feed?

As soon as I get more info I will post.

Some of the early 335i's suffered with turbo failures but I've not heard of problems with the 335d so I suspect you've just been unfortunate; would be interesting to know what's caused it though as both turbos going together does seem strange. However, at least it's covered by warranty; hope it's put right and that you're back up and running soon!

Any idea what the cost would have been to put this right?

I have an X3 3.0SD and I'll definitely be keeping the warranty renewed when it hits 3 years old, not that it's given us any problems so far.

If the small turbo has blown its guts into the bigger one... then what has the bigger one blown into the cylinders ?

Any news of why the turbo's failed? Did it cause any further damage?

My 535D has had a similar problem twice (59k miles, 3 years old soon, owned from new)

Both times it was simply a sensor and replaced under warranty. I really wouldn't be worried if I were you.

ETA on the second occasion the dealer initially thought the smaller turbo had gone and replaced it at a cost of circa £2000 (so I was told), only to then admit they'd made a mistake and it was a £25 sensor!

I used to have a 535d and currently have an X5 3.0 SD, never had a problem with either. Mind I had both form new and whilst I use the cars capabilities I let them warm up etc first.

I think that extended warranty is good value, it's cheaper than we were quoted by VW for my wife's Golf GTi

Any recollection what the sensor was? Maybe a part number? smile

Well done that man!

I did just under 70k in a DMS 335D! I have to say it was the best car I have ever owned and i should of never sold it!

It's so good I'm going to buy a used one for the wife. God i miss that torque...

In addition to all the above, the smaller turbo on mine has just spat its dummy out after 96k. No maps, religeous oil changes, and 6 track days. Engine never switched off until turbo's cooled, bad luck?
