'53 E46 318 Ci Sport

Off to look at one of the above on Sunday at a Main Dealers.
It's a facelift coupe model on a 53 plate with 63k on the clock.
I'm 21 and have never owned or looked into BMW ownership before so just after opinions/things to look out for/common problems with the model?
Have heard the E46 has a great chassis (guess that's true of most BMW's though), but wondering how the engine is (it's a 2.0 litre i understand). Any 'real-world' MPG figures would be great too.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
