A neighbour has a 318 E36 beemer coupe like mine (not sure if its also a 318iS) but after a month of ownership the engine died (major damage to the 4th cylinder). It has been sitting on her drive for ages and she asked me what she should do about it.

I suggested an engine from a scrapyard beemer and getting that fitted. No need for one of these refurbished, guaranteed units, unless they're cheap enough) as the entire car only cost £1200. Anyone any idea what the cost of an engine and fitting it would be?

Is it worth fixing? What did it cost her?
I have a 318 8v with 150k on the clock and a 318is 16v with 90k and they are both running sweet, the engines are excellent hers must be a right dog.

as it's the coupe, it'll be the 16v iS.
engines should be plentiful, and if you have access to a hoist, you'b probably be able to swap the engine in a day, or at least over a man-weekend

may be worth a post on the PBMW/SELOC forum. I know of an engine available (but may be too good, if you know what I mean) and there's guys who can fit them quickly over there.

How old is the car? It could be an M42 or an M44 engine in a 318 coupe. Not sure if there are any complications fitting one type into a car that originally had the other type, so make sure you know what you're doing before you do it!
