At the moment I am floating around in an old 316i Compact, an N reg one. It has done 163k, and so is pretty high mileage, but I have to say I am really impressed by the way the car has handled the mileage. There are no creaks or groans, no nasty noises from anywhere and it still feels very tight and taught on the road.

Everything works on the car, and the bodywork is pretty good - just two small areas of bubbling on the edges of the rear arches. The interior looks like that of a 50k car - no excessive wear anywhere, the seat is not worn and has not collapsed or sagged.

Still pulls well, and not a hint of smoke or engine problems, and it is whisper quiet.

It has had a wash since that pic was taken and even the wheels trims have come up like new. Got all the books and the toolkit is intact and all there.

I know its not anything to get too excited about, but when a car exceeds your expectations by a considerable margin then I just had to share!

Get some Autoglym Bumper Care on the lower black plastic bits and it should smarten it up a lot.

You're right though, the e36s seem to really take the miles in their stride. I use a 318iS as a track car. It's now on 152,000 miles and still running really well and certainly not showing its age.

Or use a heatgun for a few seconds to bring the colour back. Smear ground nut oil on, leave it for 30 mins, then buff off the oil and dress it.

The wife used to have a MINI Cooper Convertible with the same kind of plastics (wheel arch, sill trims etc.). Used olive oil on the faded/whitened plastic and it brought them up like new smile Don't know how long it lasted, because we sold the car a month later.
