Evening all,

I'm probably going to need to cahnge the imput shaft seal on the gearbox of my E30 (it's a 320i gearbox), can't seem to find any guides online and anywhere convenient that sells the seal itself (not on GSF etc).

Can anyone point me in the right direction to get the seal (and also an output shaft seal) and does anyone have a guide to actually change the seal.....

....or is it just a simple pull out - push in operation?

I don't know why but that has made me a little uncomfortable.... eek

Anyway, yes already been on Real OEM, not really any advice to help with fitting though. And may have to deal with BMW to get the parts then.

I have 3 gearboxs and they all fecking leak! And I would still have to remove the box and put it back in which is the biggest job.....

....plus I know the box in mine is working perfectly, I may put another in and find out it's fked.

Quite right.

Boxes may be cheap but who knows what you're getting! Replacing a complete decent box because of a couple of £10 seals is daft!

Anyway...

Try www.bmminiparts.co.uk , they don't have the seals in stock but you can request a price via the parts finder. They will be BMW parts and more than likely slightly cheaper than the main stealer.
Either that or main stealer, they shouldn't be hugely expensive.

Removal and installation is easy and applies to pretty much all type of oil seals.
Get a hammer and small punch or small pointy screwdriver and make a couple of holes opposite side of each on the centre face of the seal (where the void is on the other side, you'll see on the new ones). Now either hook or pry out with said screwdriver or you can carefully wind in a screw to get some grip on the seal and then pull out.
Always take care not to damage the seal mating surfaces!

Installation is just a case of using a suitable drift, a large socket can work if you can get it over the shaft other wise careful even tapping around the seal with flat drift works just as well (12o'clock, 6o'clock, 3o'clock, 9'o'clock etc.).

Just to add.
Check the gear linkage seal too (item 17 on the diagram). These are often past their best, worth doing while it's out. www.bmminiparts.co.uk have them in stock at £2.54+VAT.

Cheers for the help guys, job for when the weather warms up slightly then.

Does anyone know of anywhere that sells a complete seal kit? I've bought them in the past for Golf gearboxs and engines, if I'm taking the box out I might as well do them all.

Also going to add a short shifter and new linkage bearings as well.
