E65 BMW CAM CHAIN SNAPPING OR SLIPPING on 3LITRE DIESEL

Can any one tell me if it is a common problen I know of 3 high mileages cars that have had new engines and the problem seems to happen around 130 to 170 thousand miles can you prevent tis from happening and is it costly? can anyone help please?
