Never owned a BMW before, but took the plunge last week. So picked up the car on Saturday and I must say I'm very impressed. I'm a convert already :-) - Was driving a Mercedes coupe previously but now I've seen the light.

It's a 2005 530d Sport with 67k on the clock. I'm very happy with the car in general, but there is a strange noise under hard acceleration at higher revs. It's like a fluttering noise, not quite a rattle, but almost and it comes from just forward of the dash, It sounds like it's behind the navigation screen.
I've spoken to the dealer ( not main BMW dealer ) and am taking it back for a checkup on Saturday.

My concern is that this may be the turbo. Is this normal ? do they all make this noise and am i worrying unnecessarily ? Or is this a problem that could develop in to something nasty ?

I didn't notice this noise when i took it for a test drive initially last week, but noticed it pretty much straight away after picking it up on Sat.

Thought I would ask you good people on here. any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

Hi Jason,

you probably didnt notice it on the test drive as you probably had your new car goggles on - when you part with your cash, thats when you notice whats wrong!

Are you sure the noise is coming from the engine bay?
Is the noise there when revved stationary with the bonnet up?

I drive a 530d at work - have never heard it 'fluttering'

Yes, I think you're probably right regarding the new car goggles ( I must be more self restrained in future ).
Thanks for confirming that's it's not a normal sound, I didn't want to take it back only for them to say "oh they all do that".
It's hard to tell with the noise to be honest as it only happens when accelerating under load and not when stationary. I'm just concerned that it may be turbo related.
The dealer has a 30 day bumper to bumper warranty, so I've arranged to take it back on Saturday. I suppose I'll have to see what they come up with and take it from there.

Was it a BMW specialist dealer you got it from?

I'd be looking to take it somewhere else first for a second opinion on the noise, the dealer you bought it from would be keen to fob it off if it sounds expensive IMO.

No - Unfortunately not a BMW dealer, and expensive is what I'm worried about :-(
Think that's a good idea to get a 2nd opinion. Although not sure that I can get that done prior to the weekend, If not, I'll definitely take it somewhere else after depending on how honest the dealer is. As you say, it may not be in their interest to be completely up front.. But I suppose I should give them a chance before casting dispersions first.

Is the noise loud enough to record with a video camera?

Sounds odd.

Is it engine speed or road speed dependent?

My gearbox (auto) makes a noise under full load, but you can tell it's the gearbox and it's only there under heavy acceleration.

This may sound silly but do you have anything in your glove box that might be making the noise?

Thanks for the pointers. I don't think it's really loud enough to record with a video camera. The noise seems more rev dependant than speed dependant, but isn't consistent. It's worse sometimes than others and sometimes I hardly notice it. But when it's there it's just one of those sounds that you know isn't right, and I'm obvoisly keen to catch it before it turns into something costly. I got a 30 day bumper to bumper warranty from the dealer, but didn't take out the extra cost warranty that seemed to cover next to nothing when you read the small print readit

I took the car back to the dealer this weekend. The mechanic agreed that the noise is unusual, but said that it definitely not turbo related. He thinks it may be something to do with the injectors so has put some injector cleaner in and said to use it for a few days to see if it makes any difference ( you never know, but I'm not expecting it to ). If there's no change they will send to a specialist who can use ultrasound. eek

Turn off your aircon and circulation system completely and let us know if the noise goes away.
