hi! had similar problem, with 87 325i could be the ecu, famous for intermittend problems, hit it a dunt and the problem goes away for days and returns sometimes dies on the road, very annoying, but first, go to the boot mounted battery, go to the positive cables, the smaller 6 guage wire, running alongside the big one, appx 18 inches in, and sheathed, this smaller cable has a 50 amp fuse, which rots due to the condensation,so famous in the e30 series, it feeds dme relay, for the ecu, spark for coil/injectors and fuel pump,my first bet would be to slit open this wee bit of the loom, and repair it,can lead you a real dance finding it as it,s not obvious, look at real oem,and see the diagram, best of luck and regards, tommy.
