BMW Oil

Hello,

Could someone please confirm what BMW recommend as the engine oil for a 2002 E46 325i ?

A chap at work needs to top it up but he didn't get a manual when he acquired the car and searching on the internet is not showing any consistency in responses.

I believe it might be Mobil 1 5W/30 Fully Syn - but the important thing is he wants the BMW recommended one not what "other people" have suggested is a better alternative.

Don't know what the specific brand/product was that BMW would have put in it in 2002, but I don't believe the dealers actually use different oils for different engine anyway (although they're supposed to).

However the requirements are: BMW LL-01 spec (2001-2003 cars) is 5W-30 which was superseded by BMW LL-04 spec (2004 onward) 5W-40.
The LL04 spec oil is also suitable for use in LL01 spec cars (but not vice versa).

MMM-Five thanks for that clarity - that was why we were getting confused, some people said 5w30 and others were saying 5w40 - but that explains it !
