Hi all looking at getting a somewhat mroe economical car, which is also abit of fund, and has enough space to carry me plus a few mates. currently looking at a Fabia vrs, or the 320d bmw, and i was just wondering if anyone has any experience with them, and what sort of MPG they return?

will be travelling up to cardiff from oxford (circa 200 miles) every few weeks, so think diesel is the best option, but any other advice is greatly appreciated! smile

I have a 2005 320cd and average approx 37mpg around town and approx 51mpg on a run at 75mph.
It is great on fuel and goes realy well. Its a good all round package. I'd recommend it to anyone.

E46 320d is a very good car I did 12000miles in 6months including a ph hoon round Scotland last year the fuel economy varies but on the commute you are suggesting I would expect a 38mpg result. You can get more but depends on your right foot.
The 6sp is the better choice as 6th is great on the motorway. I had mine remapped and it was a good choice.

The fabia is good will be better on fuel but the e46 is a nicer place to be.

Hope that helpd

Got a bit over 500 miles to the last tank and that was filling up only a few miles after the fuel light came on, not 'careful' driving either.

The 6th gear is handy, sits at just under 2000rpm at 70mph.
